How Do Lionfish Kill Coral Reefs?
Lionfish themselves don’t actually kill coral reefs – but they eat the fish that keep the reefs alive. Many of the fish living on our reefs are essential to maintaining healthy reefs. These different species of reef fish eat algae and prevent corals from becoming overgrown and dying. These species of reef fish help keep our reefs healthy and without them our reefs suffer.
When they are eaten in large numbers, reefs risk becoming overgrown in algae. Combine this destruction with rising ocean temperatures, pollution, bleaching and other stressors on our marine ecosystems, our reefs are only increasingly in danger.
