About Nate Sorensen
I’m Nate Sorensen and I have a non-profit dedicated to the removal of lionfish in South Florida! You will find me and my crew out on the seas saving the reef fish from this invasive predator as much as humanly possible! We use tools such as pole spears, zookeepers to hold our catch safely and underwater scooters to propel us along and fight the current. We put our catch to good use by selling the fish for restaurants to sell an alternative to the traditional fish they might serve. You might even see us around town fileting fish and giving demonstrations trying to spread the word about the removal of these predators.
What do you like about lionfish hunting?
Diving itself is the most enjoyable experience I’ve ever had. You never know what you will see on a dive! From sea turtles, sharks and a vast variety of fish life, it is truly an adventure. When I get to put diving to good use by helping the environment it is always a plus. When we’re down there on the ocean floor we like to pick up trash and fishing lines and of course, collecting the lionfish so the reef can thrive. At Lionfish Extermination Corp we aim to help the reef rather than to hinder.
What do you like about the lionfish community?
It’s nice to know there are others that care about the environment and want to help out. Even if you are just talking about the problem and supporting it you are helping out! You don’t have to dive to be a lionfish slayer.. we can all help! But I strongly recommend diving. It is definitely a life-changing and awesome thing to do.
