About Christine
I’m a wildlife biologist in the upland habitats by day but my “play” passion is conservation through lionfish removal in the marine environment on weekends – like an adventurous treasure hunt. My search for lionfish has taken me from the brackish waters between mangrove propagules near the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse to more than 100′ down on wrecks and reefs.
What do you like about lionfish hunting?
I’ve gone hunting hundreds of times, yet every time I feel thrilled. It’s the exhilaration of the catches but most of all I enjoy what comes later. Yes, it’s the ceviche! But also I surprise people with the beauty of this invasive species in lionfish jewelry, and spreading the awareness at local events. Even though the species is harmful to our Florida reef ecosystem and needs to be controlled, we can still make the best of the situation by enjoying it in a different way!
What do you like about the lionfish community?
The fact that we are all doing this for so many reasons, but that the main shared reason is for ecological conservation.
